The Oakfield Town Board last week adopted a resolution to make Elroy D. Parkins Park on Drake Street and all town-owned or -operated outdoor recreational facilities cheap cigarettes free, according to Kevin Keenan, coordinator of Smoke Free NOW, a program of Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.
Previously, the town had a smoke cigarettes free regulation noted on the picnic permit application and one posted sign, but with the assistance of Smoke Free NOW, the board passed the above resolution unanimously, Keenan said.
Additional signs will be provided by Smoke Free NOW and the residents will be able to engage in healthy activities without exposure to secondhand smoke cigarettes or the litter of cigarette butts.
"Cigarette butts are an environmental issue and are the most common form of litter," Keenan noted.
Discarded butts, if ingested by children and animals, can cause toxic poisoning. Filters are not 100 percent biodegradable. As the filters break down they leach toxic chemicals into the ground that can seep into waterways and pollute water sources.
Smoke Free NOW continues to work with other community groups and agencies throughout Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties to create similar policies for their municipalities.
