No More Ice Cream Signs On Cigarette Truck

You never could buy an ice cream sandwich at the cigarette truck in Greenwich, but it looked like you could. Not any longer.

The owners of a Sunoco station on the Connecticut-New York border have removed the ice cream signs from the only ice cream truck they use to sell cigarettes, the Stamford Advocate reports.

"The first week it was there, there were little kids running up to it thinking it was an ice cream truck," Bob Taylor, of the Byram section of Greenwich, told the Advocate.

After NBC Connecticut covered the story and other stations followed, the Choco Taco and Creamsicle advertisements came down, the Advocate reports.

"We realized we probably did the wrong thing," Faruk Iqbal, who works at the gas station said.

NBC Connecticut called the store for confirmation on Friday morning and was told to call back later in the morning.

The reason for the cigarette truck is taxes. The gas station store is in Port Chester, New York, but the gas pumps are in Greenwich, Connecticut. By parking the truck on the Connecticut side of the property, the station can charge Connecticut taxes, which are $1.35 less than New York taxes.
