In the very near future there will be no lighting-up or even using chewing cigarettes online in Montville's public parks.
The director of the Uncas Health District said he's heard from parents, who've told him they've seen people smoking cigarettes on the sidelines of their kid's game, and they wanted to say something, but were afraid to speak up. He says this ordinance allows them to say 'hey I don't mind the smoke, but I just want to warn you it's not allowed here at this park.'
It's a move to make parks in Montville not only smoke cigarettes free, but buy cigarettes free, so no lighting up, and no chewing cigarettes.
"We need the youth to understand it's not the right thing to do," said Stan Gwudz, Chairman of the Montville Parks and Recreation Commission.
Gwudz believes Montville is the first town in the state to approve this type of ban, prompted after Parks and Rec Commissioners did a walk through of Camp Oakdale a year or so ago during a youth football game.
"We noticed there were quite a bit of parents smoking cigarettes, and we said 'no this isn't right.' You go to a high school game, soccer, football, baseball, it's understood that you don't smoke. So why should the parks and rec facilities be any different," Gwudz said.
"I'm a non-smoker all my life, so I think it's a great idea," said Montville resident Robert Henseler.
But not everyone is on board with this ban.
When asked what he would say to the people who smoke cigarettes when they say they're outside and they should be able to do so, Gwudz answered, "We're gonna ask them to have to respect the ordinance, and respect the people near you with second hand smoke."
Soon, the only smoke cigarettes in the park will be coming from the grills. There is a $99 fine for violators, but the town is hoping that it won't come to enforcement, that education like signs in the park will keep people from lighting up.

From a health standpoint, there’s a lot to be said for banning smoking cigarettes from the Montana State University campus. But the blanket ban on cigarettes store use adopted by campus leaders earlier this month seems a bit much.Protecting nonsmokers from secondhand smoke cigarettes is certainly a good thing, and measures to ensure that happens are justifiable. But a ban on all use of discount cigarettes on the 1,400-acre-plus MSU campus – including smokeless discount cigarette online and online cigarettes use in individuals’ private vehicles – doesn’t seem necessary to...
