Live Oak Smoking Ban In Parks Moves Ahead

A proposed ban in Live Oak on smoking cigarettes in parks and within 50 feet of the entrance to public buildings won support from eight speakers, including four high school students.

Mayor Gary Baland said the City Council has directed the staff to draft an ordinance that will be reviewed in a study session. The council meetng was Wednesday.

Yuba City in 2008 prohibited cigarettes use in Gauche Aquatic Park and the next year extended the ban to all parks as well as 50 feet from public buildings.

"The measure received strong community support and little public opposition," City Manager Jim Goodwin had said in a report to the council.

The Live Oak council will take up during a study session a separate measure on cheap cigarettes licensing that requires retailers to obtain a yearly license to sell cigarettes. No draft ordinance will be prepared for the license measure, Baland said.

Live Oak would be the first city in Sutter County to enact such a license.

More than 60 California communities have adopted cheap cigarettes ordinances, according to the Live Oak staff.
