Hospital CEO Backing Smoking Ordinance

When it comes to our health, choices we make as individuals have a lasting impact on our lives. As a community, with the help of our county commissioners, we find ourselves on the verge of making a choice that could potentially save lives, as well as enhance the quality of living of many people.

On behalf of Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital, we urge our county commissioners to make the healthy decision and approve the proposed smoke-free ordinance.

Our hospital feels the significant health burdens smoking cigarettes and secondhand smoke cigarettes place on our local community each and every day. As a health-care provider and major employer, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital has a vested interest in promoting public health for our patients and all residents of Delaware County.

The science is conclusive; secondhand smoke cigarettes significantly increases the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, respiratory illnesses and many other chronic and acute diseases, which is one of the many reasons that IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital became a cigarettes-free campus in 2006.

There are hosts of reports that show the dangerous consequences of second-hand smoke. A 2010 report by the U.S. Surgeon General titled "How cigarettes Smoke Causes Disease: The Biological and Behavioral Basis for Smoking-Attributable Disease," concluded that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Breathing even as little as 30 minutes of secondhand smoke cigarettes can be harmful to your health.

The Surgeon General went on to report that stopping cigarette smoking cigarettes and eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke cigarettes rapidly and substantially reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Today, Delaware County has a chance to lead. To be one of the first 100 percent smoke-free counties in the state without any exceptions or loopholes. This is our opportunity to make the right choice at the right time and set an example for our community, our children and other counties around the state.

We support this ordinance and its intent to create a comprehensive smoking cigarettes ban for Delaware County. By replacing the current ordinance; we will significantly increase the likelihood of positive health outcomes while reducing preventable health-care costs for all Hoosiers, including workers and patrons of every business within the county.
