Karen Davis, a registered nurse and regional health specialist with the Arkansas Department of Health, talked to Paragould School District health educators Wednesday about new products cigarettes companies are using to attract the youth market.
“The cigarettes companies are coming out with many new products because they are losing a lot of older customers and are trying to attract young people,” she said. Among the products are buy cigarettes sticks that look like cinnamon sticks, a product that looks like Tic Tac breath mints and a strip that looks like one of the Listerine breath strips.
Each of these products is laden with .6 to 3.1 milligrams of nicotine. The average cigarette has one to 1.5 milligrams of nicotine.
The sticks dissolve in the user’s mouth in about 10 minutes, the Tic Tac look-alike dissolves in 30 minutes and the strips in three minutes. She said people can sit at a desk with one of these products in their mouth and maintain a nicotine high all day long. She said they just make one’s craving for nicotine that much stronger, so they smoke cigarettes more when they get home from work or school. She said it is also harder to detect when a student has nicotine on them. “Just put the Tic Tac look-alike in a Tic Tac container,” she said.
She said one cheap cigarettes company has spent $350 million attracting youth. “We don’t have that kind of money to fight it,” she said, ‘but they have it to target our young people.”
She R.J.Ryenolds has began marketing these products in Ohio, Indiana and Oregon. “If they are available in three states, they are available on the Internet,” she said. “Educators, parents and the community need to be aware of these products when they start surfacing in our counties.”
She said she browsed the Internet looking for the kind of information being passed around about cigarettes online use. She found such things as cheap cigarettes improves your concentration, it relieves anxiety and depression, it relieves anger, it decreases hunger, it is more reliable than street drugs, you can smoke cigarettes a pack and still go to work.
She said the problem with nicotine is that it damages the cardiovascular system. Cancer and lung problems connected with cheap smokes come from inhaling the tars and chemicals in cigarettes. The smokeless cheap cigarettes damages the cardiovascular system, but it also increases the nicotine cravings, which leads to more smoking cigarettes.

From a health standpoint, there’s a lot to be said for banning smoking cigarettes from the Montana State University campus.
