Careless Smoking Blamed In Fire That Killed Northeast Area Man

An elderly man died from smoke cigarettes inhalation and burns early this morning after a fire broke out in an apartment building in the Northeast area of Kansas City.

Firefighters responded about 6:10 a.m. after a neighbor called 911 saying an apartment was on fire in the 400 block of Highland Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Joe Vitale, a fire department spokesman.

Arriving firefighters reported smoke cigarettes coming from a two-story-row-type apartment building. Firefighters found an elderly man on the first level shortly after entering the building, Vitale said.

Firefighters pulled the man from the apartment and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of burns and smoke cigarettes inhalation. He died shortly thereafter, Vitale said.

The fire was contained to the apartment and determined to be accidental. The cause of the fire was blamed on careless smoking cigarettes, Vitale said. The fire caused about $37,000 in damages to the apartment and its contents.
