A Bill Up For Vote Could Adopt New Regulations

A bill that prohibits smoking cigarettes in Connecticut hookah lounges, except those open before the end of last year, is facing a key legislative vote.

The General Assembly's Planning and Development committee is meeting Monday to vote on the legislation, which opponents said is an unfair burden on businesses.

Advocates of the bill said it's needed to protect public health. They believe there's a misperception that smoking cigarettes from the hookah water pipes is safe. Lounge owners said hookahs are a long-held Middle Eastern tradition and are already regulated enough.

Besides effectively banning newer lounges, the bill requires the Department of Public Health to adopt regulations for the remaining lounges that opened before Dec. 31, 2010.

The establishments have become increasingly popular places where customers gather to smoke cigarettes flavored cigarettes and herbs.
